Following his assignment as a prime maritime officer in the Dutch East Indies (1599-1601), Pieter Both, born in Amersfoort, The Netherlands 1568, was appointed 'supreme ruler' in November 1609 with the primary task of creating a trade monopoly between the island islands of the Indies Dutch only with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and not with other countries, especially England. And Pieter Both began by establishing trading posts in Banten and Jakarta (1610).

Pieter Both held the post of Governor General of the Dutch East Indies from 19 December 1610 to 6 November 1614. And he succeeded Entered into trade agreements with Maluku Island, conquered Timor Island and expelled Spain from Tidore Island.
After being replaced by Governor-General Gerard Reynst, Pieter Both departed back to Holland with four ships, but unfortunately he sank in the waters of Mauritius along with his two ships.
